BOOK MILL
and
BRIDGE OF FLOWERS bike ride

Oct. 7, 2006
64 miles
.
high
 temperature
65 degrees

Starting from the Book Mill in Montague, Mass., we followed the Book Mill cue sheet
from Seven Hills Wheelmen. Using the Rubel Bike Map for Western Massachusetts,
we added a detour to the Bridge of Flowers in Shelburne Falls.
It was about 45 degrees at the start at 9:30,
but we were warmed up soon -- this ride has lots of climbing!

From the top of Mount Sugarloaf
in South Deerfield, overlooking
the Connecticut River and the town of Sunderland, we watched
hot air balloons take off.

From Mount Sugarloaf you can see
the Julia Child corn maze, but you can't quite
make out the design. This picture is from mikesmaze.com.

The largest sycamore tree
east of the Mississippi River,
known locally as the Buttonball tree.
More than 200 years old, the tree
is on Route 47 (North Main Street)
in Sunderland.

Start/finish: Book Mill -- "Books you don't need in a place you can't find."
Post-ride refreshments: Lady Killigrew Cafe at the Book Mill --
Appealing atmosphere, good menu. We love the warm brown rice salad (here's the recipe).
