Thursday, Sept. 17
Notches ride, 85 miles
. Starting from Fryeburg, Maine, we biked up Evans Notch (the steep way, Route 113 northbound) and took the back road along the Androscoggin River (as opposed to Route 2) to Gorham, N.H.

From Gorham we went up Pinkham Notch (Route 16 southbound) and down to Bartlett. We took Hurricane Mountain Road ("steepest paved road in New Hamsphire") back to Maine. The sign says "17% grade." The last time we biked it was in September 2005. This time, coming at about mile 75, this climb got the better of me.
We've biked all these roads in the White Mountains before, but this was Rick's first time going up Evans Notch in this direction, and Lynne's first time biking Pinkham Notch in this direction.

Lunch was at a place in Gorham where we'd been on our August trip. Here's the photo album from that biking and hiking week in the White Mountains and Rangely Lakes area of Maine.

After the ride we drove into North Conway, N.H., and met Steve B. for dinner at May Kelly's, then continued our drive to Twin Mountain.
