We started hiking up the Avalon Trail from the Crawford Notch Visitor Center (railroad depot), but about 2 miles up, we turned back in a cold downpour on the A-Z Trail. We had skipped the turnoff to the Mount Avalon summit (3,442 feet), intending to loop back to it via the Willey Range Trail and Mount Field (4,326 feet).
