Ammonoosuc Ravine hike

First things first: a nutritious breakfast
Gem Pool
Rime ice was melting off the trees. The overnight low temperature on Mount Washington had been 24 degrees.
Mount Washington Weather Center
Mount Monroe (5,372 feet), seen from Lakes of the Clouds hut. The trail goes up the ridge on the left, which got socked in by fast-moving clouds while we ate our snacks on the leeward side of the hut. Some hikers wearing shorts started up and quickly turned back -- "Not the day to do this without any gloves."
Caution prevailed and we headed down rather than continuing to the top of Mount Monroe or Mount Washington. Rick recommends reading "Not Without Peril" by Nicholas Howe, which chronicles ill-fated White Mountains adventures and leaves you respecting the area's wild weather. Here's a slideshow from the book.

The Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail starts at the base of the Mount Washington Cog Railway and follows the Ammonoosuc River up the western slope of Mount Washington.

Clouds were blowing in, obscuring the summit of Mount Washington.

Rime ice

Lakes of the Clouds hut, closed for the season. The wind was about 30 mph in our face here.
Wouldn't you know, after we decided to descend and got back below treeline, the sky cleared at the top of Mount Washington (6,288 feet).
