Wednesday, Sept. 20 -- Telluride to Ouray -- 50 miles

We rode on a nice bike path that paralleled the busy road out of Telluride for a few miles, and then we had a chilly 12-mile downhill to Placerville on Route 145.

"Read" this one from right to left
for the way we went.

With a long line of cars and trucks stacked up behind us on Route 145, we didn't mind waiting for the go-ahead to use the one lane left open during construction. We let the cars go first, and then we had the road to ourselves.
.
We had lunch at Sandy's Sunshine Kitchen in Ridgway. We were leaving town when we saw all the vintage cars. It was the Colorado Grand, an annual rally of sports and racing cars built before 1961.

.
A very gradual climb of about 10 miles brought us into Ouray, the "Switzerland of America." The last few miles, it started to rain. We checked in to the Historic Western Hotel, built in 1891, and explored the town on foot in a downpour.

Dinner was in the hotel saloon
("No dancing on tables with spurs").
The face painted on the barroom floor has been restored a couple of times. The story is that the original artist was paid with beer.

Last Dollar Road
(We didn't bike this dirt road. It's off Route 62
between Placerville and Ridgway.)
.
Dallas Divide on Route 62 was an easy 13-mile climb
to 8,970 feet, mostly at a grade of 3 percent
or less -- and we had a tailwind!
We got great views of the Mount Sneffels Wilderness
in the Uncompahgre National Forest.

.

The Beaumont Hotel in Ouray
is on the National Register of Historic Places.
So is the City Hall, which contains the public library,
where we checked our e-mail.
.

We had a big room
with a claw-foot
tub in the bathroom.
