Thursday, Sept. 16

We biked a 25-mile loop, up Washington Gulch Road and down Slate River Road.

We were on pavement the first couple of miles.

Entering Gunnison National Forest
We took a break before
it got really steep. This was shortly before the
sign for Elkton, elevation
10,500 feet.
During this rest stop, Lynne got a phone call saying she was a winner in the New Hampshire Dream Vacation Contest -- no joke!

Heading down, we met
a pair of riders
from Boulder
who were going up.

Slate River Road

Resting at the hairpin turn ...
... we watched a guy bike up the steep section
that we had
just come down.

Almost every house in Crested Butte has a bike rack -- and a great view.

The road got too steep and sandy for me
in this thin air, and I walked
a bit.
We topped out at 10,994 feet and got great views.

After that it was mostly downhill.

Back in town, after returning the rental bikes,
we took a sunset walk on the recreation path.

Geology lesson:
What are laccoliths?
The sky was a little hazy
with smoke from a wildfire to the west.
We ate salads at
the Secret Stash,
where the clock is
permanently stopped at 4:20,
and then had drunken noodles
at Ryce Asian Bistro.
