When no such documentation could be found, the following sources were consulted for name spellings. 

1. Family or friend 
2. "A Dictionary of Jewish Surnames from the Russian Empire" by Alexander Beider 
3. Kremenets vital records (1870-1894) made available by the Kremenets Shtetl CO-OP 

The spelling sources for each surname are listed in the table below. Where there are variant spellings, they correspond in order to the sources listed. For those unfamiliar with Polish spellings, a few rules of pronunciation: Polish "c" is pronounced like English "tz." Polish "cz" is pronounced like English "ch." Polish "j" is pronounced like English "i." Polish "sz" is pronounced like English "sh." Polish "w" is pronounced like English "v." Thus, the name spelled "Kac" in Polish is equivalent to the English "Katz." Similarly, "Szmulowicz" would be written "Shmulovich" in English. 

If the spelling source is Pages of Testimony at Yad Vashem, the Shumsk records from the Central Archives for the History of the Jewish People or "family or friend," the source refers to the same individual(s) or family as the Shumsk necrology. Names found in the other sources may or may not refer to the families in the Shumsk necrology, and in many cases this has not been determined.
