Dec. 31: Upper B&M Trail along the Ammonoosuc River at Bretton Woods
.
.
Aug. 6, 2009: We hiked up Mount Pierce
(4,310 feet), with Bretton Woods
and the Mount Washington Hotel visible below.
The same area, the previous summer,
on a "rest day" during
a 500-mile
bike trip. More photos from the August trip.
Rick goes "REDRUM"
as we approach the Mount Washington Hotel.
(Remember the telepathic boy
in the haunted hotel in "The Shining"
who spells out "MURDER" backwards?)

NHLiving.com debunks the local lore that the Mount Washington Hotel was author Stephen King's inspiration for the ghost-ridden Overlook Hotel in the novel "The Shining." Neither was it a film location for the Stanley Kubrick horror movie "The Shining," in which the caretaker (played by Jack Nicholson), snowed in for the Colorado winter with his family, descends into homicidal madness. The exterior shots of the fictional hotel were the Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood in Oregon, according to this FAQ.
Speaking of Timberline
Lodge and Jack Nicholson
as ax murderer, see photos from our 2008 Columbia River Gorge bike trip.
We're getting the hang of taking
self-portraits at arm's length.
Rick prepares a healthful New Year's Eve feast: ginger-garlic vegetable soup with rice noodles, spinach salad, and chicken sauteed with sweet potatoes.
After skiing we stopped by the AMC's Highland Center at Crawford Notch to get some trail info for the next day.

After dinner we took a walk to view the blue moon (second full moon in a month*). This Associated Press photo was taken in Nairobi, Kenya, but it's the same date and the same moon.
*The truth about the blue moon
