Monday, Sept. 10 -- Crescent Creek to Bend -- 74 miles

It was about 40 degrees when we left Crescent Creek Cottages at 9 a.m.

Going uphill gradually on the Cascade Lakes Highway, we warmed right up.

Nine years after the Davis Fire,
which consumed about 21,000 acres, mostly lodgepole pine and white fir trees,
in June and July 2003

.

This couple, recent empty nesters, had started biking from Portland the week before.
They were following the
Sierra Cascades Bicycle Route. They were doing the route in pieces, and had done some southern segments before, and didn't know if they'd get all the way to Mexico on this trip.
.
They told us a big wildfire had started the day before near Sisters. We'd see the smoke when we got around the next bend.

Devil's Lake (elev. 5,446 feet)

Sparks Lake

Looking back at Broken Top, with smoke visible at left from the aforementioned
wildfire in the Sisters Wilderness.
The road topped out at about 5,700 feet, at
the entrance to Mt. Bachelor Ski Resort.
The heavy equipment was a good sign:
They'd just finished repaving
the long downhill into Bend. Whee!

Dinner was
at Pho Viet
& Cafe

Sparks Lake was a favorite of Ray Atkeson, photographer laureate of Oregon.

On the 21-mile downhill into Bend,
one more geology lesson, at the Newberry-Cascade Battleground

In Bend, we settled in for a two-night stay at a downtown motel with laundry, Internet, etc.
