Volcano
We drove past huge pastures full of grazing cattle to the top of Mount Aso, an active volcano, about 20 minutes up the road from Jigoku Onsen. There's a "ropeway" (gondola) to the crater, at about 1592 meters elevation, but we drove up the road. The steam rising from the glacial-blue lake in the crater blended with fast-moving clouds above. The cool mountain air felt great after a hot, muggy week, but not all of us were dressed for the mountain-top winds.
