Fussen to Oberammergau -- 35 miles

We biked a few miles to the ticket center in the village of Hohenschwangau on the lake Alpsee and got time-specific tickets for tours of the royal castles Hohenschwangau at 9:45 a.m. and Neuschwanstein at 12:30 p.m.

We biked uphill to Schloss Hohenschwangau,
where King Ludwig II spent his childhood.

Lynne returning to the village from Schloss Hohenschwangau, pictured, and starting uphill toward Schloss Neuschwanstein.
.
The climb to Neuschwanstein was tougher, because we had to pass a horse-drawn carriage and the road was crowded with pedestrians.

We followed the nice flat Romantischestrasse (Romantic Road)
bike paths to Halblech, and then the rougher, hillier Bodensee-Konigssee Radweg (Bikeway) to Altenau.

We saw lots of paragliders.

A tricky spot on the trail

A johannesbeere (red currant) pastry
helped keep us going.

It was really hot, probably in the 90s, and we waited as long as possible on the shady side of Neuschwanstein for our tour time, people-watching and listening to tourists speaking many languages.
